Sahara Off-road and Trekking-Tour to Erg Chegaga

Day 1 Marrakech to Mhamid

In the morning, we start from your riad and head towards the High Atlas Mountains. We cross the Tizin Tichka Pass with approx. 2.260 m. On the way, we make some stops to take pictures and to enjoy the landscape of the Atlas region.

We visit the famous and well-preserved Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Kasbah from the 17th century is the backdrop of numerous Hollywood films.

At noon we reach Ouarzazate where there are some active film studios. Then we drive to the green Draa river valley, which is lined with thousands of palm trees. After a stop In Zagora, we continue to Mhamid and go from there directly to the desert (our camp) for our first night in the Sahara.  -/-/D

Day 2 Mhamid - Sidi Naji

We start our trekking around 8.00 am towards the great dunes of Zahar. After about 3 hours of walking, we reach the beautiful oasis Rase Nkhal with dozens of palm trees. An example of ecotourism. The lunch break with a cup of mint tea (berber / nomadic whiskey) that will give us the energy for another 3 hours of riding or walking.

Later, After another 2 hours, we reach our second night camp. We set up our tents between sand dunes and Tamarisk trees. We enjoy our dinner around the camp fire and the night under the starry sky or tent. B/L/D

Day 3 Sidi Naji - KrayAt Jmal

After breakfast, we start into the vastness of the Sahara. We walk about 3 till 4  hours, explore and enjoy this fantastic landscape. Lunch break under shady tamarisk trees. Later we reach the dunes of KrayAt Jmal, our destination for the night. Enjoy the sunset on sand dunes. Dinner at the camp fire and the night under the starry sky or in the tent. B/L/D  

Day 4 KrayAt Jmal - Chegaga

In the morning and as usual, we continue our trekking through the extraordinarily landscape. After 3 hours we take lunch. Then, we head by 4x4 vehicle towards Erg Chegaga passing various desert landscape full of Acacia trees and stony desert. After covering 50 km of track, we reach the dunes of Erg Chegaga – the amazing group of golden desert dunes stretching for 40 km and reaching a height of 300 meters. A cup of mint tea and some nuts are offered before you head for an unforgettable walk to enjoy the sunset. A traditional nomad dinner with music around fire and overnight accommodation in a nomad tent or outside surrounded by the dunes of the Sahara.

Day 5 Erg Chegaga - via Foum Zguid to Marrakech

After breakfast, we start by our jeep through the charming views towards the town of Foum Zguid, the first village after the desert. In this way, you will discover the fully dry lake of Iriqi that used to be the source of prosperous life in the area. Stop to have a look at the fossil place. After a break in Foum Zguid, we continue driving to Taznakht, the city of beautiful and colorful handwoven carpets (optional stop in a carpet cooperative of different types in the area). After lunch, we take the road towards Marrakech throught the Atlas mountains again, return to Marrakech at the end of the day. B/-/-
